Age: 9,10,11,
Project Year: 2010
Students covered a number of topics collaboratively
At the start of the project the schools got to know each other by using the forums and a video conferencing session. The project was devided up into topics which were covered collaberatively, these included vikings, renewable energy, bridges, the seven wonders.
Vikings: Pupils completed projects on Viking lives, origins of,
impact on Ireland, longboats, raids etc.. They also constructed model of
Viking longship from cardboard template.
Sustainable/Renewable Energy: Pupils examined the use of fossil
fuels and why the continued use of these sources is damaging to the
environment. We then progressed to study sources of renewable
energy, completing projects on each of these. We had a workgroup on
renewable energies given by SEAI, with the sessions being shown to
Elmgrove classes via the video conference facility. Both schools
also presented their information to each other during a seperate
video conference.
Bridge Building: Pupils examined different types of bridges,
looking at their construction, materials used, purpose of, and see
examples of each from around the world. In groups, they then
moved on to construct their own structures. Elmgrove had engineers in
their school building a bridge on site, and this was shown to
Kill pupils via the video conference.
Face-to-Face
We decided to consolidate the learning that took place on vickings in choosing our face-to-face.We took a tour of Viking Dublin (Dublinia) and had a fun trip around Dublin on Viking Splash. Elmgrove NS stayed overnight in Dublin, with Kill NS meeting them on the morning of the event. Schools were divided into relevant groups and split between the Viking Splash tour and Dublinia. Pupils then met up at lunch time before switching tours for the afternoon. Before Elmgrove left for their train, both schools met up again to say goodbye.
